A friend recently called me up asking my help to enhance the ties of some activist groups he is touch with, by using the web.

I have been reading a bit about the web2.0, I had a quick brush with Ning and I mused on philosophical issues.

Now, it is the right time to act.

I am pretty certain that what I want to do is to not start some kind of website project from scratch.

The group already has a small website, acting as a web frontend for the organization, but I would rather go for existing services or a mush-up rather then trying to run the infrastructure on our own.The other point is that, while I am very willing to spend time to create new stuff and put ideas together, I am not willing to put much effort into the maintenance.

I also believe this is a chore that the community itself should take care of, learning how to live their own spaces and take care of them.I can see that on the web there are plenty of web2.0 apps, but what I see missing is some kind of glue to put together what I need into a single mushup.

The lack of a single sign-on is particularly critical.

We could go around this, by gathering user subscription requests through the main site and then automate subscriptions to all the different sites of the mush-up, making sure the usernames and passwords are unique.

However this is both labour intensive and it raises some doubts from a privacy point of view. What I am doing now is to look for a all-in-one community container.

Something that provides single sign on to a number of basic services, which allows html customization and enhancements, and that allows easy administration of the system.

Leveraging Power through the Web

You might have already read about the PriceRitePhoto episode .

To make a long story short, this camera dealer in NY was trying a cheap scam on people and when a guy confronted him he started becoming seriously abusive.   Now, this guy was also a blogger and he denounced what had happened on his blog.

News of the event went out to digg and within hours the 'people of the web' started taking action.  Mostly they started talking about it.  Within a month the story of the event has gone on the NY Times and PriceRitePhoto seems to have gone out of business.

To me this event represents the first sign of a shift of power  to the community.  For the first time people have the communication resources to coordinate their efforts and act together for what they believe it.  Even more important, abuses can be denounced and made clearly visible.

Imagine if you could tag the physical world with text, pictures and voice, as you are there experiencing it. Imagine if you could surf the soul of a place from the impressions of people that have experienced it on the web. The 'real' world will merge with the noosphere, as information and material objects start interleaving.

You don't like the service in a cafè? As soon as you leave it you give it a negative rate. The next customer approaching the place will see your negative review overlayed to the place, if she is tuned on your layer of broadcasting, on your 'fold'.

You will be able to leave poems hanging from the branches of a tree under the window of your loved one, and the tree will sing them to her in the morning, as she walks in front of it.

You can see battles raging in the streets of french medieval towns, and you can follow legionnaires from old movies along the streets of rome.

You can see people in the park coloured according to their interest groups or according to the topics they would like to discuss. Maybe an engine will suggest that two of you have an interest in common and will gently suggest to introduce you to each other.

Koiné - Time Shared Self Sustaining Social Systems

In the previous post I wrote about TAGs, small temporary proof-of-concept experiments.
Now I would like to elaborate on another concept that interests me: medium-long term communities that can survive even without the full-time contribution of any of their members. This is almost the opposite of a TAG, that totally relies on the enthusiasm of a very specific cabal of people.

I initially called this initiative Time Shared Self Sustaining Social Systems, but then I settled for Koiné, which means "common", as in "of the community".

A Koiné tries to answer to the question: how can I fruitfully organize in a scalable way the limited efforts of a large number of participants? Suppose that you would like to help a certain cause that you care about, but you would like to devote it only a couple of hours, sometimes. Or maybe you would like to devote a week of your holidays to some activity, but a week is just enough time to waste the 'serious' workers time without contributing anything to the community.

How can you design a self sustaining social system that works using bits of time from volunteers? How can you design a system that has roles and memories and attitudes and action plans for those roles? How can it be so simple that people can become immediately effective within that system? How do you build a peer-to-peer occasional community that can be effective in the 'real' world too?

How do you do it?

How would you design, let's say, a company that operates 24/24 hours but only between 8pm and 10pm on every time-zone? How would you design a phase-nation that exists only on saturday afternoons?

In a previous post I wrote about TAGs, internet-oriented temporary groups based on a transversal mix of skills, based on agile coordination and action oriented. Every TAG lives to deliver something and it is action/task oriented rather than ideology oriented.

I would like to see TAGs spontaneously emerge through the internet, and in a sense they do already, but I would like to work more on the specific social format that I outlined. Open Source is similar to a tag, but it is longer lived. A TAG is a bit like the inception phase of an open source project, except that it lives *only* through its inception. It is not meant to continue, even if it can later regroup for another purpose.

A <TAG> is a social Spike. You do it to push some kind of boundary, either personal or social. You do it to gather knowledge and to give it back to the larger community. A TAG lives through the time of a single Spike, then disbands.

I have just found out about about Ning, a software platform to build social software and I want to see if I can use it to build a platform supporting TAGs. In Ning you can clone an application that you like and then expand on that. While looking for something matching the TAG concept I found find-a-developer, composed by Jonathan Aquino, the renaissance man that also brought us YubNub.

I was glad to see that Aquino was working on something with a structure similar to TAGs, and I have no doubt that I have found a very good shortcut cloning Aquino's social app. I'll post more on TAGs as I develop and change the tagpod meeting place.

The Social Evolution of Software

Today I came across CodeTree.

Can digital artists learn new techniques, be exposed to new coding structures, and better express themselves by working in tandem or in a group?
CodeTree is an attempt to create a worthwhile dialogue between new media artists of different skill levels and backgrounds. The project's objective is to offer a social network that facilitates learning and artistic expression—a place where coders can dissect, share, and expand upon one another's code.

The site is nice, but what really hits me is the possibility of creating some kind of 'live' repository for code.
Ok, I know we have sourceforge, rubyforge and all those other forges and they do have forums and tools to comment on dovelopers, but I'm thinking about something different. Smaller piecies of code for a start. Nuggets of code that can be understood at a glance and modified with a quick brush on the keyboard. Think Java Almanac.

I would like these piecies of code to be tracked during their evolution, and to be able to follow the personal history of their contributors too. I would like to comment on them via a wiki-like interaction. I would love to use them via intellisense in my code.

I want to be able to sketch my intent and as soon as my 'Intentisense' picks up interesting keywords, somethink looking a bit like Google Suggest. If I do my own modifications I would then like to upload them directly to my Noosaurus, my shared executable knowledge thesaurus.. for other people to see and modify and rate and rank and tag.

Coding like tagging like blogging... I feel this can have huge potential.

Temporary Action Groups or Transversal Agile Groups, as you like.
It occoured to me that while there are many open source project, I haven't seen many projects that span across several disciplines.

I find inspiring to think that a group of similar minded people from different walks of life can come together to produce something beautiful across several media and from different ascpects, each one contributing with his own special skills.

This happens in companies and in some activist groups, but I don't see it happening spontaneously without the push of money or political ideology.

I would like to see <TAG>s emerge. I would like to see a system that allows people from different disciplines but similar attitudes to find each other and to assemble into small hit-and-run teams that can collaborate on small significant projects, disband and coalesce again in different forms.

I envision a <TAG> having the following characteristics:

small, so that it can be agile
leadership is task ans skill based and it can be shifting
it acts mainly through the internet, since the internet is pushing more and more into our lives and it allows you to have the right mix of impact per expended effort within a reasonable amount of time
temporary, based around a single well defined task rather than around a campaign or an ideal
transversal since it brings together expertise from several fields
it's action based. The creation of a final product is the goal of its existence
it's extremely focused on obtaining a certain goal within a limited amount of time
it's agile since it is willing to keep changing its tactics and it reasons on how to refine the process

A Look from Outside

It may be too early too say something about it, but I feel that something may be changing in Italian politics.
I'm not talking about factual changes yet, but there is something that is changing in the way italians perceive themselves and their institutions.

I think that belonging to a larger european community is a big part of this emergent shift of perception.

Italian political dialectics have been for a long time mostly self referential. Suddenly there is Europe, there are external observers that give the Italian ruling class someone towards whom they can feel ashamed for their actions and attitude. Just think about Fazio. His continued presence at Banca d'Italia is causing daily embrassment to the country.

I think that a few years ago, without this external 'screen' on which this shame could be projected, the situation would have gone back to normal in a few months. It will be interesting to see how it develops. In the meantime stay tuned on Beppe Grilo's Blog.

Democracy 2.0 is a project that plans to rewrite laws from scratch via a wiki medium. I'm not entirely sure of the validity of this experiment as I believe that a system as complex as a body of laws needs to evolve and adapt rather than being designed.

However this project gave me an idea. Law is knowledge and some knowledge can be encoded in an executable format. What if laws could be translated to code?

You would have systems of laws that can be checked for consistency and loopholes. The laws that apply to a given situation could be searched and legal simulations could be run as well.

Laws of course need interpretation, but I still wonder if there is a useful subset that could be mapped to code.

Nooclay started being shaped in the early 21st century, as the early avant-garde noo-shapers were experimenting with the possibilities offered by search engines, weaving patterns and intentisense, for tapping into the universal intent. The old software was a fragile thing, breaking continuously at the least change in the environment. The nooclay, or nootrium, by contrast adapted itself, filling up every hole it could find. It was a pervasive noomaterial, filling and adapting via cultural bias to the intents of the shaper. The nooclay took hints and started sketching and filling, while the semantic nudges of the shaper bent it and reorganized it into new forms.

Our sense of reality has a certain inertia.  The avant-garde lives in the future, most people live the present and big companies and institutions lurk in the past and ancient history.

When you are used to work on the edge of media and technology and live a life of enhanced interaction via the web, having to interact with certain companies and institutions gives you the feeling of having entered a parallel steampunk world where high science rubs elbows with 19th century bureaucracy.

It inspires tenderness to watch an institution trying to come to terms with a certain technology, while the rest of the world has already moved to some new cheaper more efficient medium.

When I find myself in one of these situation I experience a strange sensation that I term 'melancholy of the present'. I will try to explain what I mean.

Imagine yourself watching an old yellowed picture from the twenties or the fifties, showing a man standing proud in front of his brand new sport car, dressing with the bourgeois fashion of the times.

How does it make you feel?  It will probably give you a weird bitter-sweet retro feeling. You can feel the naive smug and pride of the man, feeling a paragon of elegance and technological prowess. At the same time you know how terribly out of date heis, and how embarassing that would have felt to him.

Now imagine you could go back to those times and be there, with that man and see that car, that world.  You would look at it and you would feel all its fragility and transient nature.  The self-satisfied rhetoric of the time would make it feel even more fragile and impermanent, while underlying the childlike innocent nature of those people.

Now imagine that that old picture was taken in the present and somehow you have felt the future, and suddenly you are back to the present time and you can feel the traces of archaisms that you just know are going to die out and become a simble of ancient times.  And you feel the frailty and impermanence and somehow love this time with all its adolescent certainties and blatant weaknesses.

I Need a Word

I need a word for a feeling that I don't know exactly how to describe.
I need a word, so that I will be able to identify it better and to communicate what I feel.

In my own mind I think of this feeling as Tiredness of the Self, boredom of your own identity.

It's too tiring being only one person with a single identity. After a while you start knowing yourself, your behavoiurs. You know what you are going to think and what you are going to say or do before you say it, think it or do it. This might be what pushes some people to search extreme or simply new experiences. When you are exposing yourself to an experience that falls out of your patterns you can wonder at your own reactions and find out something new about yourself.

I find solace in airports, train stations and hotel rooms. I crave the anonymity and loneliness that allows to forget the self. I embrace that moment of forgetfulness while slipping into sleep.

Why limit our political dimensions to left and right, when you can also have up and down, back and forth? :-)

Political Compass is a step in that direction (I turned out to be slighlty leftish and libertarian), but I would love to see new different dimesions and perspectives to catalogue and understand political stances.

Philosophical Roots

When I was a kid and I read about the middle ages I always felt indignation for what I felt that had been wasted time in the history of humanity.

When reading pre-renaissance philosophy I also felt enraged for the massive amount of time I believed had been wasted on idle musings about God and angels, a stale extended interval between the philosophical tradition of the greeks and their reborn spirit in 15th century Florence.

What I didn't get was that the very same philosophical themes that I felt were important had not been eradicated by the Church, but were living under different names and within different religious orders. It couldn't have been otherwise at the time. That was the dominant paradigm, but trascendent ideals and equalitarian ideals, and artistic ideals had not been lost. They just had to change clothes, and were wearing the words and frameworks of consensual reality.

Next time you read something by a christian medieval philosopher, try substituting modern words whenever they mention mystic transcendental forces, and you will be amazed by the depth and clarity of their thinking. You will find socialism there, mystical drive and radical thinking. You just have to discount the historical context and wording and look for the deep memes.

On a lighter note, you can imagine how the modern world would be interpreted my those ancient thinkers. I found here a little perl by Umberto Eco, where He discusses the Catholic and Protestant spirit of different computer brand factions. I just love the guy.

The Wu-Ming Foundation is a Bologna-based novelist group producing collaborative work under the collective name of Wu-Ming.

You can download many cool postmodern novels from their website, listen to their radio and download a few mp3 of readings of their short stories. Most of their stuff is in italian, but you can also find some stuff in spanish and something in english.

They are better known in english-speaking countries for their historical novel Q, published under the pseudonim "Luther Blissett". If you like Umberto Eco's stuff, you will like their stuff too.

Teatrino Clandestino

"Teatrino Clandestino" is the name of a theatrical group I have recently seen in Rome. If you have always thought of theatre as stripped-down real-time cinema with a slow narrative, think again.

I went to see "The Milgram Project" and it was a breathtaking revealing experience. They play with different media, perception, time-line and narratives in a very clever and original way.

This is a theatre for new generations, explicitly playing on videogame-like narratives and on the thin boundaries between reality, fiction and virtuality.

When Code is the Law, Architecture is Politics

I know, I am five years late on this one; but this meme felt so powerful in its implications that nevertheless I had to blog about it.

I found out about this meme while reading Tomorrow Now, an excellent book written by Bruce Sterling. In one of the chapters Sterling talks about the role of the law in the near future and he mentions Lawrence Lessig, an avant-garde political theorist from Stanford university. Lessig wrote a book titled “The Code is the Law”, explaining his theories on intellectual property laws and more in general on the role of law in cyberspace. I found this article and here Lessig mentions the “Architecture is Politics” meme, originally worded by Mitchell Kapor of the Electronic Frontier Foundation.

You don’t have to agree with the political views of Kapor or even with Lessig, to appreciate this meme, which describes the meta-context within which rules can be made in the first place.

When we say that the code is the law we mean that in a “space” like the net, where the parameters of reality, action, interaction and communication are configured via software, then the code determines what can and what cannot be done. It’s not as much a matter of establishing ‘soft’ laws in a parliament and then trying to enforce them on people by policing the web, as much as it is a matter of building a software medium within which those laws are hard reality and cannot be circumvented by definition.

You will always have skilled hackers, able to subvert the foundations of a certain software reality, but for the greater majority of people, that code is the law… in an even stronger sense than any ‘soft’ law, whose violations must be reported, monitored, tracked down and punished via the clumsy bureaucracy of law enforcement.

When code defines reality, then code is the law and architecture –the foundation framework of code– is politics.

A Vision of the Future

There is a certain image that keeps coming to my mind.

It's one of those almost archetypical images with a kind of iconic quality to them. Think of the student in Tienanmen square standing in front of the tank.

I am thinking about an image that embodies the spirit of a certain age.

However this is an age still to come.

I see this picture from the near future: a twenty-something year old girl standing in front of an armed policeman, his baton raised in mid air, ready to hit. She holds herself with quiet confidence, her right arm outstretched, holding a small videophone in her hand. pointing it straight to the policeman. a flashing badge on her chest shows the hits of her realtime feed, climbing up frenetically as the policeman approaches.

The policeman doesn't understand that quiet self-assureness and he slows down and then stops, like a video put on pause, looking around for some possible explanation. He is surrounded by half a dozen quiet determined young boys and girls, just holding tiny mobiles in front of them as shields.
